Consortium

The Consortium is composed by four European SMEs, vertically integrated, with the proper expertise in the technological and business topics faced in the project. The SMEs have the common need of fostering the transition to innovative and competitive processes, and through their contacts in their sector, they have discovered the strong need for a cost effective and innovative approach that will give the market competitive benefits compared to available products.

The main roles and strategic interest of each SME is:

TEP is an Italian Energy Service Company (ESCo), always looking for competitive and efficient technologies to propose for Third Party Financing (TPF). By such a financing scheme, TEP installs and manages efficient technologies by means of own resources, earning thanks to the energy bill saving. Therefore, it is clear how finding high efficient and low cost energy technologies is the core business of the company. TEP will be the project coordinator and will support the product specifics and project targets definition activities.

ENCONTECH BV is a Dutch engineering company, expert in engine design and development. It is the initiator of the Up-THERM technical idea together with University of Twente and it is looking for partners to further develop the Up-THERM engine up to a CHP prototype and to define an integrated market strategy. The exploitation of Up-THERM technology would allow to develop a competitive product with many potential applications, promoting the company in the European market. ECT will give a crucial support in engine and 3 kW CHP design.

NOON ENERGY is a Spanish small company developing an innovative Stirling engine specifically designed and optimized to run on concentrated sunlight. Developing an innovative heat engine, with a cost much lower than Stirling (200-500 €/kW vs. 2.500 €/kW at least), will make more cost-competitive the NE technology, opening a more extended market. NE will participate at the system design and at the testing phase, making available a concentrating solar power (CSP) plant. (Project representative: Camille van Rijn)

EFICEN is a Spanish energy technologies distributors and ESCo. EFICEN has the strategic interest of proposing new and efficient technologies to its customers, also implementing a TPF scheme. EFICEN will assess the product final performance and analyze the strategies for market exploitation. (Project representative: Carlos Vicente)

University of Twente was the initiator of this technological development, having formulated and developed the novel engine configuration together with the SME Encontech BV. UT will be the leader of tasks devoted to regenerator and engine design and will give a support in the CHP executive design, fabrication and testing.

(Project representative: Prof. T.H. Van der Meer)

LABOR has been chosen for their longstanding and proven track record as research center experienced in complex mechanical and electronic system design, having worked in several research projects serving the innovation needs of many European SMEs. LABOR will be responsible of 3 kW CHP executive design, prototyping and testing.
